- Flower of the month: Ranunculus
Ranunculus
Tempt spring into your shop with Persian buttercups, a tuberous crop with a small bud which produces a sea of petals. The grower plants the tubers for this seasonal flower in the autumn, so that Persian buttercups peak just when you're ready for a spring celebration. Good timing! We’d like to tell you more about this spring flower, and offer some inspiration.
Origin
The botanical name is Ranunculus asiaticus. Persian buttercups likes to grow alongside water, so it's no surprise that they’re named after another green water enthusiast: the frog. Ranunculus derives from the Latin word ‘rana’, which means ‘frog’.
Colours
The Persian buttercup is very similar to the peony, but if you look closely you can definitely spot some differences. The edges of the Persian buttercup are more clearly defined than on the peony. Persian buttercups comes in white, yellow, orange, pink, red and purple. The petals open one by one, so you can slowly look deeper into its stunning heart.
Symbolism
A fun fact to share with your customers: Persian buttercups symbolise charm. In Victorian times the message given by a bunch of Persian buttercups was: "I feel you have many charms." And you can still make people happy with a colourful bunch of Persian buttercups.
Care
“Hey, the Persian buttercups are still going!” Your customers will definitely be saying this if they follow your care tips:
• Cut a piece off the stem;
• place the flowers in a clean vase with clean water and bulb flower food;
• not too much water, because the hairy stems can't tolerate it;
• regularly top the vase up with water;
• place your Persian buttercups in a cool spot, so not in direct sunlight or in a draught.
