- Plant of the month: hydrange

Hydrangea
Large, full umbels with small star-shaped flowers give the hydrangea its charm: the plants are associated with the long, light days of spring and the atmosphere of summer. Hydrangeas have a light sweet fragrance and are a lavishly blooming eyecatcher, not only outside but definitely also indoors, with substantial flowers and fabulous green leaves.

Indoor hydrangea
The indoor hydrangea has a positive impact on a healthy indoor climate. With its strong ability to influence humidity the hydrangea helps ensure good humidity in the home. Complaints of dry skin, headaches and dry eyes decrease and you feel better with this houseplant in your interior.
The indoor hydrangea is a seasonal product, available from January to October. High season runs from March to August with the best availability of indoor hydrangeas.
Garden hydrangea
The familiar pink, blue or white balls, plumes and posies are erupting in front gardens; the hydrangea is a very popular garden and pot plant, particularly because of its extremely lavish flowering. The hydrangea is also an easy plant that brings attractive colours to your garden.
The garden hydrangea is a seasonal product, available from March to September. High season runs from April to August with the best availability of garden hydrangeas.

Colours
Hydrangeas are available in an abundance of colours, including white, pink, red and blue. There are also bicoloured varieties: pink/white and blue/white. Most hydrangeas change colour during flowering, e.g. from pink to dark green. In that way the hydrangea keeps surprising you.
Shapes
The hydrangea symbolises grace, beauty and abundance because of the extravagant number of flowers and the generous rounded shape. The hydrangea is available in many different shapes.
The best-known hydrangea is the mophead hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla). The panicle hydrangea (on the right in the photo) differs from other hydrangea types with its large plumes and its upright growth. Another fairly popular hydrangea is the Annabelle. The cream-coloured spherical flowers bloom from July to September.

Environmentally-friendly cultivation
Hydrangea cultivation is very environmentally-friendly! The nursery makes little use of fertilisers and energy to grow these flowers. As a result, most hydrangeas are given the MPS-A or MPS-A+ certification. This was one of the topics we discussed with hydrangea grower Sjaak van Schie.
